“An excellent introduction to graphic design through [the author’s] own excellent work. Anyone interested in the subject, including most practitioners, will find it delightful.”―Milton Glaser

Kids love to express themselves, and are designers by nature―whether making posters for school, deciding what to hang in their rooms, or creating personalized notebook covers. Go, by the award-winning graphic designer Chip Kidd, is a stunning introduction to the ways in which a designer communicates his or her ideas to the world. It’s written and designed just for those curious kids, not to mention their savvy parents, who want to learn the secret of how to make things dynamic and interesting.

Chip Kidd is “the closest thing to a rock star” in the design world (USA Today), and in Go he explains not just the elements of design, including form, line, color, scale, typography, and more, but most important, how to use those elements in creative ways. Like putting the word “go” on a stop sign, Go is all about shaking things up―and kids will love its playful spirit and belief that the world looks better when you look at it differently. He writes about scale: When a picture looks good small, don’t stop there―see how it looks when it’s really small. Or really big. He explains the difference between vertical lines and horizontal lines. The effect of cropping a picture to make it beautiful―or, cropping it even more to make it mysterious and compelling. How different colors signify different moods. The art of typography, including serifs and sans serifs, kerning and leading.

The book ends with ten projects, including an invitation to share your designs at GoTheBook.com.

Qualitative Networks: Mixed methods in sociological research (Social Research Today)

Buy Now!

$148.00

How do we interact with people in our everyday life? Who are the people we are connected to? What are the consequences of overlapping social circles and how people deal with the potential emerging conflicts? What are the structural and cultural mechanisms that regulate social worlds? Network science is a scientific approach to the study of network dependencies and associations which tries to answer these and many other questions. This book explores the underlying mechanisms that regulate social life as they are produced, reproduced, modified, and abandoned in the spatial and temporal patterns of interactions. The mixed methods approach, that combines formal network analysis with qualitative materials and statistical tools, shows the importance of contextualising structural mechanisms in their social and cultural environment, and allows overcoming the traditional methodological boundaries that shape the field of social sciences.

The Impact of Social Media on the Arab Spring Uprising in Egypt: An Essay to Discuss Cause Versus Acceleration

Buy Now!

$5.38

The focus of this essay is to provide an analysis of the effect of social media on the Arab Spring uprising in Egypt in 2011. What has now been coined the “Arab Spring” began with protests in Tunisia in late 2010. It then quickly spread to countries throughout the Middle East and North Africa. It resulted in national leadership changes in Egypt as well as Tunisia, Yemen and Libya. In Egypt, President Hosni Mubarak ended his presidency on Friday, February 11, 2011 as a result of the actions of protestors, numbering in excess of 2 million in Egypt.

Communication mechanisms always play a role in grass root uprisings which have led to national leadership changes. There has been much discussion and some academic work on what part social media played in Egypt’s Arab Spring uprising. Some even credit the start of the Arab Spring uprising in Egypt with a Facebook page administered by Wael Ghonim. The site, We are all Khaled Saeed, brought worldwide attention to the death of Khaled Mohamed Saeed; a young Egyptian man that died while in police custody.

This essay seeks to understand what impact social media played on the Arab Spring uprising in Egypt. Was social media simply a communication tool utilized in the Arab Spring uprising in Egypt? Or, was social media in Egypt more than a tool. Was it an accelerator to the eventual outcome of the uprising?

The Experience Economy, Updated Edition

Buy Now!

$15.63

In 1999, Joseph Pine and James Gilmore offered this idea to readers as a new way to think about connecting with customers and securing their loyalty. As a result, their book The Experience Economy is now a classic, embraced by readers and companies worldwide and read in more than a dozen languages.

And though the world has changed in many ways since then, the way to a customer’s heart has not. In fact, the idea of staging experiences to leave a memorable—and lucrative—impression is now more relevant than ever. With an ongoing torrent of brands attacking consumers from all sides, how do you make yours stand out?

Welcome to the new Experience Economy. With this fully updated edition of the book, Pine and Gilmore make an even stronger case that experience is the missing link between a company and its potential audience. It offers new rich examples—including the U.S. Army, Heineken Experience, Autostadt, Vinopolis, American Girl Place, and others—to show fresh approaches to scripting and staging compelling experiences, while staying true to the very real economic conditions of the day.
